It has to introduce a world, a cast, and a tone quickly, deliver a satisfying hour or half-hour on its own, and simultaneously demonstrate the 'engine' that will generate story for seasons to come. The work typically starts one level up from the script itself: what is this series actually about, structurally, that gives it five seasons of story rather than one. Once that's solid, the pilot gets written to demonstrate it.
